ALASKA IS NOT FOR SALE:
Rallies planned to oppose AK LNG development and other fossil fuel projects promoted at Gov. Dunleavy’s “Sustainable Energy Conference”

ANCHORAGE – Several Alaska groups will host rallies in opposition to the Trump administration’s visit to Anchorage this week to speak with international stakeholders about the president’s stated goal of "unleashing Alaska's resource potential." Rallies are planned for 4-5pm on Monday, and 12:00-1:30pm on Tuesday, both outside of the Dena’ina center.

Groups including Native Movement, Fairbanks Climate Action Coalition, Alaska Community Action on Toxics, and Action Alaska oppose the Trump administration’s intention of increasing Alaskan oil and gas production and Gov. Dunleavy’s intention of bullying Asian leaders into committing to buy Alaskan LNG.

“Alaskans should have autonomy over their own resources, and we do not take kindly to being used as a pawn in Trump’s trade wars,” says Sarah Furman, Co-Executive Director of Fairbanks Climate Action Coalition. “People have been trying to build an LNG pipeline for decades, but it’s just not economical and it does not benefit the Alaskan people. No matter what kind of agreement may be signed this week, we’ve seen it before, and it does not mean there is enough legitimate interest in buying Alaskan LNG to make it happen.”

“The AK LNG project goes against our way of life that we have been fighting to protect everyday,” says Jasmine Jemewouk, water quality and community health protection coordinator at Alaska Community Action on Toxics. “Our reliance on subsistence resources is threatened by climate change, with harmful industrial development steering migrating animals away and polluting the environment. We urge you to say no to the Alaska LNG project to protect our way of life.”

“The news of the proposed rescinding of the protections for the National Petroleum Reserve of Alaska is extremely disappointing," says Sonny Ahkivgak, Organizing Lead at Native Movement. “Over 250,000 people across the country advocated for the protection of these lands last year, clearly communicating the unified desire to maintain the health of the Arctic in the face of unprecedented climate change. We are prepared to continue to have our voices heard in our commitment to clean air, water and land for future generations.”
